八字命理
Ba Zi (八字), literally “Eight Characters,” is the most widely practiced system of Chinese destiny analysis. It is also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱推命). The system was formalized during the Song Dynasty by Xu Ziping (徐子平), giving rise to the alternative name Zi Ping Ba Zi (子平八字).
At its core, Ba Zi maps the moment of your birth onto the sexagenary cycle of Heavenly Stems (天干) and Earthly Branches (地支). Your birth year, month, day, and hour each produce one Stem-Branch pair — a single “pillar” (柱) — yielding eight characters in total:
The Day Pillar’s Heavenly Stem is called the Day Master (日主) — it represents you. Every other character in the chart is interpreted relative to the Day Master through the Ten Gods (十神) system, creating a complete relational map of your life.
四柱详解
The Year Pillar represents your ancestral lineage, your early childhood environment, and the broader generational context you were born into. It is determined by the sexagenary cycle, rolling over at Lichun, the beginning of the solar new year (early February) — the same boundary the Ba Zi reading tool uses for its year pillar. In chart analysis, the Year Pillar governs grandparents and external social standing.
Of the four pillars, the Month Pillar holds special weight. It determines the season of birth and the strength of the Five Elements in the chart. The Earthly Branch of the Month Pillar defines the Pattern (格局) — the governing framework through which the entire chart is analyzed. The Month Pillar represents parents, career, and your formative environment. Its boundary is not the lunar month but the solar terms (节气), making it the most technically precise pillar to calculate.
The Day Pillar is the heart of the chart. The Heavenly Stem of this pillar is the Day Master, representing you — your essential nature, your conscious self. The Earthly Branch is the “Spouse Palace,” governing marriage and intimate partnership. Every relationship in the chart is mapped through the Day Master using the Ten Gods system.
The Hour Pillar represents children, creative output, later life, and the legacy you leave behind. It is the most private and interior of the four pillars. In traditional analysis, it also governs subordinates, investments, and hidden aspirations. The hour of birth determines this pillar’s Earthly Branch via the twelve two-hour periods (时辰) of the day.

The sixty possible Stem-Branch combinations form the backbone of the Chinese calendar. Every year, month, day, and hour carries a unique pair, generating the eight characters of your Ba Zi chart.
The Ten Heavenly Stems are the pure expression of the Five Elements, each in a Yang (active, expanding) or Yin (receptive, contracting) phase. They move through the Earthly Branches — twelve stations that add seasonal, directional, and animal-archetype layers to the elemental energy.

The Ten Gods (十神) are not deities but relationship types. Each character in the chart is classified by its Five Element relationship to the Day Master — is it the same element? Generating? Controlling? — and by its yin-yang polarity match. This dual-axis classification produces ten distinct relationship archetypes, each governing a domain of life:

格局论命
In the Zi Ping tradition, the Earthly Branch of the Month Pillar is the “Pattern Center” (格局中心). It determines which of the Eight Standard Patterns (八格) governs your chart:
Each pattern has its own logic of success and failure. A pattern is “successful” (成格) when the chart supports its governance — the right companion gods appear, the Day Master is strong enough, and no clash or combination destroys the structure. A failed pattern (败格) signals a life path with more obstacles, though remedies (救应) may still restore balance.
Beyond the eight standard patterns lie the Special Patterns (外格) — including Follow-the-Leader (从格), Transformation (化格), and the One-Element Dominance patterns (专旺格). These occur when one element so dominates the chart that normal balancing rules no longer apply.
调候用神
Every chart is born into a season, and every season carries a climate that must be balanced. This is the contribution of Qiong Tong Bao Jian (穷通宝鉴): the understanding that certain elements become critical in specific months regardless of the formal pattern.
The Fire-Water axis is the most fundamental in climate theory — the Ji-Ji (既济) principle. A chart that achieves the Fire-Water balance after adjustment signals completion and harmony. This seasonal lens is essential: a chart that looks excellent on paper may fail in life if born into a season that freezes or scorches its Day Master.
