Each animal carries a fixed element, a Yin-Yang polarity, and a personality sketch. Your birth year modifies that base nature through the five elements.

Quick-witted, resourceful, and versatile. The Rat is a natural survivor with sharp instincts and an eye for opportunity. You thrive in social settings and adapt to change with remarkable ease. Your charm opens doors, but your real gift is knowing which door to walk through.
Years: 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020

Diligent, dependable, and strong. The Ox builds through patience and persistence, never rushing but never stopping. Others may underestimate your quiet determination, but you are the foundation upon which great things are built. Your word is your bond.
Years: 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021

Bold, passionate, and magnetic. The Tiger charges into life with an intensity that inspires and unsettles in equal measure. You lead with courage, not calculation. Your restless spirit seeks adventure, meaning, and the next horizon.
Years: 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022

Gentle, elegant, and perceptive. The Rabbit navigates the world through subtlety and grace rather than force. You possess a refined aesthetic sense and an emotional intelligence that makes others feel truly seen. Conflict drains you; harmony restores you.
Years: 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023

Charismatic, ambitious, and visionary. The Dragon commands attention without asking for it. You dream at a scale that others find intimidating, and you possess the energy to make those dreams real. Your confidence is not arrogance but a genuine connection to something larger.
Years: 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024

Years: 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015

Witty, curious, and endlessly inventive. The Monkey solves problems others do not even see and does so with a playful spark that makes the impossible look easy. Your adaptability is your superpower. Boredom is your only true enemy.
Years: 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016

Observant, precise, and courageous. The Rooster sees details others miss and speaks truths others avoid. Your standards are high, for yourself most of all. You are the early riser, the one who prepares while the world sleeps, and your readiness is your edge.
Years: 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017

Years: 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018

Generous, warm, and unshakeably good-natured. The Pig gives without counting and trusts without suspicion, not from naivety but from an inner abundance that scarcity cannot touch. Your presence calms. Your generosity inspires. You complete what others begin.
Years: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019
The most beloved origin story comes from the Jade Emperor, who called a great race to decide the order of the zodiac. Twelve animals set out to cross a river. The Rat, small but cunning, hitched a ride on the Ox and leaped ahead at the last moment to win first place. The Ox came second, the Tiger third, and so on until the Pig ambled in last, having stopped for a nap.
The Cat, left out of the race in most versions of the tale, never made the zodiac at all — which is why, in Chinese folklore, cats and rats remain enemies. The story is myth, but the twelve-animal cycle it explains is real: the earliest complete listing of all twelve animals matched to the twelve branches appears in Wáng Chōng's Lùnhéng (論衡, 1st century CE), and the pairing was already in everyday use by the Eastern Han.
Each Lunar New Year ushers in a new animal. Decorations, red envelopes, and family gatherings center on the year's animal and its associated blessings.
Traditional thought speaks of Six Harmony (六合), Triad (三合), and Opposite Clash (相冲) pairs. These ideas are cultural shorthand for compatibility, not scientific rules.
Some families consult the zodiac when naming children or choosing auspicious dates. Businesses may reference the year's animal in marketing. These practices are folklore and tradition, not guarantees.
A Wood Rat is not the same creature as a Fire Rat. The animal gives the base temperament; the stem element colors it. Wood adds growth and vision. Fire adds warmth and transformation. Earth adds grounding and nourishment. Metal adds precision and structure. Water adds depth and intuition.
Multiply twelve animals by five elements and you have sixty archetypes — enough variation that two people born twelve years apart in the same animal sign can feel quite different. This is why the full stem-branch pair matters.
The zodiac is deeper than “I am a Dragon.” Ten Heavenly Stems meet twelve Earthly Branches to produce sixty unique year combinations. The same animal returns every twelve years, but the element — and therefore the flavour of that animal year — changes each cycle.
Because the least common multiple of 10 and 12 is 60, the full stem-branch cycle repeats every sixty years. A Wood Dragon year (甲辰) feels different from a Fire Dragon year (丙辰) or a Water Dragon year (壬辰). This is why Chinese astrology often speaks of sixty personality types, not twelve.
